"I try to stay focused on the style I want to present that comes from my heart, my soul, my culture and my beliefs. I work hard to make sure that this sensibility is imbued in my clothing. The clothes I make are much more than just clothing. I want the clothing to transfer an emotion, which is the function of art.
My Spring/Summer 2009 collection is inspired by the idea Woman as flower with the idea of the meeting of East and West; Orientalism and Opulence. When I was growing up and I was sad, all I would need to do was look out the window at the jasmine in the garden and my mood would lift. I wanted to express that in my most recent collection. A rose referenced love. A tulip brings a smile. The lily is intoxicating. These are emotions I wanted to express in my collection this season. The fabrics I chose, silks and satins, also express the delicacy and exquisiteness of the flower and the woman.
